Not amazing but it works
Had one of these as a kid and the nostalgia is the only reason I put up with this device. Cheese always leaks out, no matter the size of the bread or position. Cleanup takes longer than the time to heat and make the sandwich. There are lots of nooks and crannies for the cheese to get into, including philips head screws on the back joints. Despite all that, it reliably makes my 3-slice American cheese + white bread toasties, so I keep it tucked into a cabinet.

Does exactly what it should
Works great! The sandwiches don’t overflow if you don’t over-fill them. I find it’s easiest to clean if you give it a wipe with a damp cloth while it’s still hot.

Perfect gift for college students and teens!
Tried this product for the first time with a grilled p b and j sandwich, and it totally accomplished the warming task with ease to create a delicious crunchy warm sammy in a matter of minutes. My husband is a long-haul truck driver and eating out has become more difficult with restaurants (fast food and others) closing their doors beginning at 8P in many areas. Perfect cheese toasties
I apparently bought this in October 2018. At first it enjoyed occasional use, but these last couple of years as my teens have discovered they have to fend for themselves sometimes, it has become a regular fixture on my kitchen side (despite multiple reminders to put it away when its cooled 😉). Tonight, picking up his plate with his cheese toasties, my eldest sighed “I really hope the person who invented this machine lives a long and happy life…they deserve to” so as a mom of picky eaters, I kinda feel obliged to finally leave a review. I know I’m on borrowed time with this hardworking machine as I’m sure he’ll be nabbing it when he leaves the nest…but I will definitely buy another! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It does work.
It leaked cheese behind and out of the back when I tried to make a grilled cheese. Maybe I did it wrong? Looked simple enough, only used 2 slices of whet bread and 2 slices of Kraft cheese slices, but it ran everywhere. I’ll try it again. Just to make sure.

FIVE STARS FOR AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE!
Believe it or not, this is what our adult daughter wanted for her birthday! She remembered the one we had when she was younger and wanted one for her own. These really do make fast and excellent hot sandwiches and their usage is really only limited by one’s imagination. We got her a bunch of other nice stuff for her birthday too, but she was most excited about her Hamilton Beach Sandwich Maker!

Straight from the 80’s
I really craved cheese toasties from my university days so I brought this entry level machine thinking it would be so easy.Firstly, haven’t found the right sized bread yet, the unit is foe very small, perfectly square bread so unless you’re ok cutting up a slice of bread to the right size it will likely be too large.Worst of all is that it doesn’t seal the edges effectively so you’re either eating hardly any filling or having filling spill out all over the unit which is really, really difficult to clean. There are nooks and crannies and even a spring that gets coated in cheese. I spend more time cleaning than eating. It does get sufficiently hot to toast the bread and heat the cheese. The clip at the front has caught my fingers more than once.On the plus side, it’s made me sure I want a panini press – flat surfaces, no dips and creases to clean so I’m shopping for one now.

Poor design makes it hard to clean
I used this sandwich make once for a grilled cheese. The cheese melted and leaked into the crevices surrounding the cooking plates. Food wiped out easily from the cooking plates, but stuck onto the plastic surroundings. I had to unscrew the plate and plastic surrounds to clean melted cheese underneath. After cleaning, I made another sandwich (to discount user error) and it ended up with the same issues. Usually HB has good equipment, but this is a miss.

Great little appliance

Good product, good price!
The product is overall good for the price. One disadvantage is that you have to unplug it every time in case you are making more than 2 servings. This is to prevent shock or burns as the appliance is still running i.e. there is no on/off switch. It is apt for small sized loafs.

Horrible quality and extremely small.
Mine arrived previously opened and covered in finger prints. This sandwich maker is junk – plain and simple. When I opened it up I couldn’t believe the quality – extremely poor construction, and doesn’t even fit standard size bread. I’m assuming the finger prints were from someone else opening and being disappointed prior to sending it back. Do not waste your time or money ordering this.

Not like the old ones
This does okay. Not as good as the original sandwich makers.I didn’t return it because I still use it for a quick sandwich, and my husband thinks they are good.Does what it should, don’t over coat with cooking spray, it works well on its own.Seals the bread, but I have to use a sharp knife to break it apart which is something never had to do with the original one.

Blast from the past!!!
I grew up loving my ham and cheese sandwich this way and now it’s time to replace my sandwich press after more than 10+ years of owning it. I got my kids hooked up to this kind of sandwich and they surely did put my old machine to good use. I was worried because walmart doesn’t sell the old ones that I got but thank God that amazon has one! The HB brand is bigger and shuts better than the walmart brand that I have. Once I received it I had to try it first and oh my wow! Stil brings back childhood memories. Perfect crust with melty cheese in between ham slices. I love it and for sure my kids will enjoy it too!

This does a good job of cooking to the right temperature and timing for a good toasty sandwich. But you lose over 1/4″ of your sandwich all the way around, which is an unfortunate waste.

Great product- But a design flaw
I have to say a sandwich maker is like a MUST HAVE in every household. Take your sandwich game up a notch! I do however have a couple negative critiques about this product regarding design flaws. There are ridges around the place where your sandwich goes. So in between the space for your sandwhich and the rest of the hardware, there is a deep ditch. This is especially painful when you’re making sandwhich with cheese in it, because it inevitably ends up stuck in the ridge which is both unsanitary and difficult to clean (almost impossible). I have had to keep my sandwhich maker in a top cupboard in hopes that the roaches don’t find it. Another design flaw is how deeply the ridges within the sandwhich maker press into the bread. When I was a child I loved the sandwhich maker my parents bought and found it a great way to make myself a quick snack after school. I cannot for the life of me remember what brand it was, but unlike this product, the sandwhich is not cut cleanly after cooking. This means I need the help of a knife to separate both sides of my sandwhich. This is just an extra step for me I wish I could avoid, but for children this is a safety hazard. Children should not need to use a knife to make a grilled cheese. I would suggest looking elsewhere if your main objective is to provide ease for your children.
